Ranch-style properties across the Bench and West Bench frequently have detached garages, carports, and chain-link fencing from the same era as the house.

Newer construction in West Boise, Southeast Boise, and Barber Valley is more straightforward, but still turns up builder debris, leftover landscaping rock, and fencing that has to be pulled before a lot is truly clear.

Not everything needs to go in a load headed for disposal. Clean lumber, fixtures, and scrap metal are worth pulling aside before the rest of the site gets cleared.

Where the Debris Actually Goes

In Ada County, most of what comes off a site clearing job ends up at the Ada County Landfill, also known as Hidden Hollow, up in the North Boise foothills off Seamans Gulch Road near Hill Road and Highway 55.

The landfill takes construction and demolition debris, yard waste, clean unpainted wood, concrete and asphalt, and scrap metal, along with mattresses, tires, and appliances for a fee. It won't take painted, stained, or treated wood in the clean wood pile, and it won't take waste generated outside Ada County.

That matters more than it sounds like. A job that gets sorted on-site, with metal, clean wood, and concrete separated from general debris, moves through the landfill a lot more smoothly than one load dumped together and sorted out later.

Permits People Forget About

If site clearing is part of an actual demolition in city limits, Boise's Planning & Development Services requires a demolition permit before anything comes down. That process involves a bond, a sewer plug review, a waste management plan, a notice period for reuse, and a diversion report once the job wraps. Skipping that step is one of the more common mistakes we see on properties getting cleared for a rebuild.

If a dumpster needs to sit in the street or block a sidewalk, that's Ada County Highway District territory, not the city's. A temporary right-of-way permit covers anything placed in the roadway or shoulder during the job.

Burning the debris on-site isn't an option either. Open burning is prohibited inside Boise city limits outside of small recreational fires, so brush and scrap have to be hauled off, not burned down.
